The Mohs Scale

A search through loss and resilience.

The subject

An allegorical series of six photographs, made between 2016 and 2018, named after the scale Friedrich Mohs devised to measure the hardness and resistance of matter.

The point of view

It is an allegorical project born after a bereavement: an unconscious way of staging inner theatres, states of mind I could not explain to myself. It spoke of the difficulty of moving on, of the strength to fight a loss or an illness, of the fragility of life and of its beauty.

Shot no. 5 was built for real, with many throws of flowers: a violent burst of something fragile.

Here I had the freedom to explore without limits and without expectations of the result, except towards myself.

The journey

Between 2016 and 2018, organically: the passing of time changed my way of seeing, and the series grew with it.

It has not been exhibited or published. One photograph received an honourable mention at the Fine Art Photography Awards.

Fine Art Photography: Personal project

Friedrich Mohs’s scale ranks minerals by hardness, from talc to diamond.

The photographs are scenes built for real, with people, flowers and places, conceived as allegories.
